FACTS ABOUT DOGS’ 5 SENSES
A dog’s eyesight is not as important to
it as its sense of smell and hearing, since it mainly hunts and orientates
itself, with its nose and ears. In fact, dogs’ eyes are typically weaker in
daylight than a human’s, although at night they are far keener, for the wild
dogs have always hunted at night, complementing their keen nose and ears with
their eyes. Scientist Disagree on whether dogs can see in colour but the
predominant verdict is that they are almost colour - blinded, seeing only black,
white and shades of grey. It is also widely accepted that a dog sees things
indistinctly, identifying a person or object by the basic shape, and confirming
its finding with its nose and ears.

POISON OUR
BEST FRIEND - DOGS?
Common foods
that we eat are dangerous to them..
NUTS - Many nuts are generally bad
for dogs as their high phosphorus content is said to possibly lead to bladder
stones, especially walnuts. They are poisonous to dogs and at all accounts
should be avoided.
ONIONS - Raw onions have been known
to cause hemolytic anemia (disintegration of blood cells)
POTATOES - Although cooked, mashed
potatoes are actually quite nutritious and digestible for dogs, the solanum
alkaloids found in green sprouts and potato skins can cause rare cases of
poisoning.
TURKEY SKIN - Causes acute pancreatic
in dogs.
CHOCOLATE - Chocolate can trigger
epileptic seizure in dogs prone to or at risk of epilepsy. Chocolate can also
cause cardiac irregularity especially if the dog becomes excited which in turn
can kill the dog. In some dogs, chocolate causes Internal bleeding which will
kill them later.
Treatment - within two hours of
ingestion, try inducing vomiting unless your dog is markedly stimulated,
comatose or has lost the gag reflex. If this happens, take it to the vet
without DELAY. In the absence of major symptoms, administer activated charcoal
as the unabsorbed theobromine chemically bonds to this and is eliminated in
the faces.

WHY ARE
DOG SENSES SO SPECIAL THAT EVEN
WE AS HUMANS
ENVY THEM FOR BEING SO ??
Dogs’ ears are almost as
keen as their nose. Anyone would confirm this whose dog has given them early
notice of another person’s imminent arrival. A dog recognize a football and
even, apparently, the sound of a familiar car, long before the person or car
comes in sight. The acuteness of dogs’ hearing varies according to breed, but
most dogs can hear sounds of 35, 000 vibrations per second. To put this figure
in perspective, the highest-pitched sound the average human ear can detect is
20,000 vibrations per second, while for cats, it is around 25,000. Experiments
have shown that a dog can hear a sound of 100,000 vibrations, although this
level of acuteness is exceptional. Most breeds of dog are equipped with large
ears, and those with erect ears, such as Alsatian can swivel them, using a
complex system of muscles, in the direction of source. Dogs with floppy ears -
spaniels and bloodhounds for example –have ability to a far more limited
degree. All breeds can use their inner ear as a filter, allowing them to focus
on a particular sound.
